River Action is a UK-based campaigning charity on a mission to rescue our rivers. UK rivers are under severe threat, with many facing ecological collapse. Stronger community action, greater public awareness, and tougher government enforcement are urgently needed to reverse this decline. River Action works to rescue rivers by:

  • Empowering communities to take action for their local river
  • Mobilising public opinion through creative and powerful campaigning, and
  • Holding the Government and industry to account, including taking legal action where necessary

River Action is currently campaigning for change in four main areas:

  • Sewage pollution: holding water companies to account for sewage discharges into rivers, and calling on the Government to reform the water sector for public and environmental benefit, not profit.
  • Agricultural pollution: challenging harmful intensive livestock practices, calling for stronger regulation and enforcement, and pressuring retailers to take responsibility for their polluting supply chains.
  • Chemical pollution: calling for stronger regulation and transparency around toxic sewage sludge on farmland, and pressuring corporations to take responsibility for the pollution caused by the harmful persistent chemicals they use.
  • Water scarcity: making the UK freshwater emergency and the issue of water scarcity the top environmental political priority leading into the 2029 General Election.
